How to Copy a Table from ChatGPT into Word, Excel or Google Docs

By the MDConverter team · Updated · 4 min read

Quick answer

There are three reliable ways to copy a ChatGPT table: select the rendered table with your mouse and paste (fine for one small table), copy the answer with the copy button and convert it (to Excel, to Word or to Google Docs), or ask ChatGPT to give you a downloadable file. The copy button gives you Markdown — rows of | characters — which is why a plain paste ends up in a single column; converting it first fixes that.

Why ChatGPT tables paste badly

ChatGPT writes tables in Markdown. What you see in the chat is a rendered table, but the text behind it looks like this:

What the copy button actually puts on your clipboard
Markdown
| Plan | Price | Users |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $9 | 1 |
| Team | $29 | 10 |
Result
Plan Price Users
Starter $9 1
Team $29 10
Paste this into Excel and every line lands in column A; paste it into Word and you get the pipes and dashes as text. The right panel is what it should look like.

Whether you get a usable table depends on how you copied (mouse selection or copy button) and where you paste (some apps understand the rendered HTML, none of them understand Markdown pipes).

Method 1: Select the table and paste (quick, one table)

  1. Drag across the rendered table in the chat, from the first header cell to the last cell.
  2. Press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on Mac).
  3. Paste into Word, Excel, Google Docs or Google Sheets.

This copies the table as HTML, which those apps can read. It is the fastest route for a single small table. The downsides: the selection often picks up text above or below the table, the chat's fonts and background colour can come along into Word, and in Excel numbers sometimes arrive as text (cells with a small green triangle) that will not add up.

Method 2: Copy button + converter (most reliable)

  1. Click the copy icon under the reply. You can copy the whole answer — the text around the table does not matter.
  2. Paste it into the converter for where the table is going:
    • Excel or Google Sheets: ChatGPT to Excel — download an .xlsx with each table on its own sheet, or click Copy for Excel and paste into any cell. Numbers become real numbers.
    • Word: ChatGPT to Word — download a .docx, or Copy formatted text and paste into an open document.
    • Google Docs: ChatGPT to Google Docs — Copy for Google Docs, then a normal Ctrl+V.
    • Gmail or Outlook: Markdown to Email.
  3. Paste or open the file.

This works the same for every table, keeps headers bold, and never drags in the chat's styling. The conversion runs in your browser, so the content is not uploaded.

Method 3: Ask ChatGPT for a file

If ChatGPT's file and data-analysis tools are available on your plan, you can ask for a download:

"Put this table in an Excel file I can download."

It creates an .xlsx (or a .csv) with a download link. This is handy when the table is large or you want ChatGPT to add formulas. For small tables, or when you want to edit the table first, Method 2 is quicker — and it works with Claude, Gemini and other assistants too.

Which method should you use?

Situation Best method
One small table, pasting into Word or Docs Method 1 (select and paste)
Several tables, or a table you will calculate with Method 2 → ChatGPT to Excel
A table inside a longer answer going into a report Method 2 → ChatGPT to Word or Google Docs
Hundreds of rows, or you need formulas built for you Method 3 (ask for a file)
Table going into GitHub, Notion or Obsidian Paste the copied Markdown as is — those apps read it natively

Prompts that produce easier-to-copy tables

  • "Return the result as a single Markdown table with one header row." — avoids tables split across several messages.
  • "Put units in the column headers, not in the cells." — Weight (kg) with 1.35 converts to a number; 1.35 kg stays text.
  • "Don't merge cells or add notes inside the table." — Markdown tables cannot merge cells, and footnotes inside cells make columns misalign.
  • "Use ISO dates (2026-03-14)." — unambiguous in every country and sortable.

What happens when you paste a ChatGPT table into each app

Comparing the two ways of copying. "Copy button" means pasting the copied Markdown directly, without converting it.

AppSupportedNotes
Microsoft WordPartlyMouse selection: table, often with chat styling. Copy button: pipes as text → use ChatGPT to Word.
Microsoft ExcelPartlyMouse selection: usually columns, numbers may be text. Copy button: one column → use ChatGPT to Excel.
Google DocsPartlyMouse selection: table. Copy button: pipes, unless you use Paste from Markdown → or ChatGPT to Google Docs.
Google SheetsPartlyMouse selection: columns. Copy button: one column → Copy for Excel in ChatGPT to Excel pastes into columns.
Gmail / OutlookPartlyMouse selection: table with chat fonts. Copy button: pipes → Markdown to Email.
Notion, Obsidian, GitHubYesPaste the copied Markdown directly; they render Markdown tables.
SlackNoSlack has no tables. Paste inside a code block (```) to keep the columns aligned.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

ProblemFix
The whole table is in column A in ExcelYou pasted Markdown. Use Copy for Excel in ChatGPT to Excel, or in Excel use Data > Text to Columns with “|” as the delimiter.
Numbers will not add up in Excel (green triangles)They were pasted as text. Convert with ChatGPT to Excel, or select the cells and choose Convert to Number.
The table is wider than the Word pageClick in the table, then Layout > AutoFit > AutoFit Window.
Grey background behind the pasted table in WordThat is the chat page’s styling. Home > Shading > No Color, or paste via ChatGPT to Word instead.
Columns are shifted in some rowsA cell contained a | character or a line break. Fix that row in the converter’s editor before exporting.

Comprehensive answers to common technical, formatting, security, and compatibility questions.

Yes. Select the column, choose Data > Text to Columns > Delimited, tick Other and type | as the delimiter, then Finish. Delete the empty first and last columns that the outer pipes create, and delete the row of dashes. Numbers may still be text — select them and choose Convert to Number.
