Paste Markdown and AI Drafts into Gmail and Outlook with Formatting

Gmail and Outlook do not understand Markdown, so a ChatGPT draft pastes with asterisks and pound signs. Paste it here, click “Copy for email”, and paste into your email with bold text, bullet points, links and tables intact.

Quick Tutorial

How to Convert Markdown to Email in 3 Simple Steps

No installation or registration required. Follow these steps to convert and export your files in seconds.

1

Paste your draft

Copy the email from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or your Markdown notes with the copy button and paste it into the editor. If the first line is “Subject: …”, move it into your email’s subject field and delete it here.

2

Click “Copy for email”

This copies the rendered email as rich text. Do not use “Copy HTML”, which copies source code that would paste as tags.

3

Paste into Gmail or Outlook

Click into the message body and paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac). Avoid Ctrl+Shift+V, which pastes plain text and removes the formatting again.

Subject: Following up on our call

Hi Priya,

Great to speak earlier. As promised, here are the points we covered:

- **Your goal:** reduce the time your team spends on manual reporting.
- **What we discussed:** a two-week trial with your own data.
- **Next step:** a 30-minute setup call with your analyst.

You can pick a time that suits you on my [booking page](https://example.com/book).

Thanks again,
Alex

Known Limitations of Markdown to Email

What this converter does not do (yet), and what to do instead.

  • Email clients apply their own fonts and spacing, so the pasted email may look slightly different from the preview and from client to client.
  • Syntax-highlighting colours in code blocks are not kept; code arrives as monospace text.
  • Images are only included if they are linked by a public URL, and many email clients block remote images until the recipient allows them. Attach or insert images with your email client instead.
  • Plain-text email (Outlook Plain Text mode, some corporate settings) discards all formatting.
  • LaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams and footnotes are not converted into email-friendly equivalents; they paste as text.
  • This page does not send email or manage mailing lists.

When to Use Markdown

Best for fast, distraction-free drafting, Git version-controlled documentation, developer pull requests, and multi-format source authoring.

When to Convert to HTML

Best for delivering formal client assets, corporate stakeholder review, publication on specialized platforms, or high-fidelity visual presentation.

Real-World Workflows

Who Relies on Markdown to Email?

Explore how engineering teams, technical writers, and data analysts streamline daily operations.

Freelancer or account manager

Sending an AI-drafted client email

ChatGPT drafted a meeting recap with bullet points and a timeline table. Convert and paste it into Gmail so it looks like a carefully formatted email rather than a block of symbols.

Impact: A professional-looking email without reformatting by hand.
Customer support agent

Writing support macros and replies

Keep reply templates in Markdown and paste them into Outlook or a webmail-based helpdesk with numbered steps and bold button names.

Impact: Consistent, scannable instructions for customers.
IT administrator

Announcing maintenance or changes

Write an announcement with a table of affected services and a command in a code block, then paste it into an all-staff email.

Impact: Commands stay monospace and easy to copy.
Engineer

Sharing developer notes with non-developers

Turn release notes written in Markdown into a formatted email for stakeholders who do not use GitHub.

Impact: Readers get headings and lists, not raw Markdown.
Best Practices & Pitfalls

Pro Tips & Edge Cases Handled for Markdown to Email

Practical advice for achieving high-fidelity conversions and resolving syntax edge cases.

Developer Pro Tips

  • Use “Copy for email”, not “Copy HTML”. Pasting HTML source into an email shows the tags.
  • Paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V). Ctrl+Shift+V or “Paste as plain text” removes the formatting again.
  • In Outlook, check Format Text > HTML before pasting; in Plain Text mode the formatting is discarded.
  • Remove the “Subject:” line from AI drafts before copying, and paste it into the subject field instead.
  • Use bold labels (**Next steps**) rather than # headings in emails; large headings can look out of place in a normal message.
  • Keep tables to three or four columns so they remain readable on phones.
  • Send a test to yourself before sending to a large group, especially if the email contains a table.

Edge Cases Resolved Automatically

⚠️ Greeting and sign-off lines merge into one line
Resolution: Single line breaks are kept as line breaks, so “Best regards,” and your name stay on separate lines.
⚠️ Numbered steps with sub-bullets
Resolution: Nested lists are rendered as nested lists, so sub-points stay under the right step.
⚠️ A bare URL in the draft
Resolution: URLs written without link syntax are converted into clickable links.
⚠️ An email address or command wrapped in backticks
Resolution: Inline code becomes monospace text, so the recipient can see exactly what to type.
Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Markdown to Email

Comprehensive answers to common technical, formatting, security, and compatibility questions.

No. Gmail’s compose window is a rich-text editor, so Markdown symbols like ** and # appear as typed. You need to paste formatted text, which you can get by converting the Markdown here and clicking “Copy for email”.

Under The Hood

How the Markdown to HTML Engine Works

Every step below runs in your browser tab; your content is never sent to a server.

01

Lexical Tokenization

Raw Markdown stream is parsed into syntax tokens with boundary and nesting validation.

02

AST Tree Construction

Tokens are mapped into a standardized in-memory Abstract Syntax Tree structure.

03

Semantic Translation

AST nodes are translated into compliant HTML elements, headings, and tables.

04

Client-Side Serialization

Output is generated directly in your browser, so it is ready to copy or download immediately.

Pipeline Architecture Specification

Your Markdown is converted to HTML in the browser by the marked library, following GitHub-flavoured Markdown rules (tables, strikethrough, autolinks) and keeping single line breaks so greetings and sign-offs stay on their own lines. “Copy for email” puts the rendered result on your clipboard as rich text. When you paste into Gmail or Outlook, the client reads the rich text and applies its own fonts; email clients ignore stylesheet classes, so the structure (bold, lists, links, tables) carries over while syntax-highlighting colours do not.

Why Choose MDConverter for Markdown to Email?

“Copy for email” puts rich text on the clipboard, which Gmail, Outlook (desktop, web and new Outlook) and Apple Mail paste as formatting
Bold, italics, bullet and numbered lists, links and quotes paste as real formatting instead of ** and #
Markdown tables become real email tables that most email clients display
Single line breaks are kept, so greetings, sign-offs and addresses stay on separate lines
Code and commands become monospace text, which stays readable in plain email clients
Preview the email before you paste it; nothing is uploaded or sent from this page

100% Client-Side Privacy & Security Guarantee

Unlike online converters that upload your files to a remote server, MDConverter runs every conversion with JavaScript inside your browser tab. Your documents are never uploaded, so they never leave your machine.
