How to Convert Markdown to Excel in 3 Simple Steps
No installation or registration required. Follow these steps to convert and export your files in seconds.
Paste Markdown that contains tables
Paste a README, notes, a report or an AI answer. The preview shows each table and the banner tells you how many sheets the workbook will have.
Check the headings above each table
Each sheet is named after the heading directly above its table, so add or rename a heading (## Q3 revenue) if you want a specific sheet name.
Download the .xlsx
Click “Download Excel (.xlsx)”. The file opens in Excel, Google Sheets (File > Import), Numbers and LibreOffice Calc.
Known Limitations of Markdown to Excel
What this converter does not do (yet), and what to do instead.
- Formatting inside cells (bold, italic, links) is reduced to plain text; only the header row is bold.
- Dates are kept as text so they are never misread. Use Data > Text to Columns in Excel to turn a column into real dates.
- Only US-dollar amounts become currency cells; €, £ and other symbols stay as text to avoid guessing the locale.
- Formulas, merged cells, colours and charts are not created — Markdown tables cannot express them.

A literature review or experiment log written as Markdown tables becomes a workbook with one sheet per section heading.
Sharing a report with finance
Your report is in Markdown, but finance works in Excel. Export the tables so they can add formulas without cleaning up text cells.

Developer Pro Tips
- Want specific sheet names? Put a short heading (## Revenue) directly above each table before downloading.
- Only adding a few rows to an existing workbook? “Copy for Excel” and paste is faster than opening a new file.
- If a numeric column stays as text, check for stray characters such as “approx.” or footnote markers in the cells.
- For European number formats (1.234,56), convert the column after import with Data > Text to Columns and choose the right separators under Advanced.
- After opening the file, Ctrl+T (Cmd+T on Mac) turns any sheet into an Excel Table with banded rows.

Frequently Asked Questions About Markdown to Excel
Comprehensive answers to common technical, formatting, security, and compatibility questions.
How the Markdown to Excel Engine Works
Every step below runs in your browser tab; your content is never sent to a server.
Pipeline Architecture Specification
The Markdown is parsed with the marked GFM lexer, which finds every table and the heading before it. Each cell’s inline formatting is reduced to its text, then typed: currency, percentages and numbers with separators become numeric cells with matching number formats; everything else stays a string. The workbook is written as SpreadsheetML (workbook, styles and one worksheet per table) and zipped by JSZip in your browser — no spreadsheet library and no upload.
Why Choose MDConverter for Markdown to Excel?
100% Client-Side Privacy & Security Guarantee
