About MDConverter
MDConverter is a free set of 53 converters for moving content in and out of Markdown — the plain-text format used by GitHub, Obsidian, Notion exports and AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. It exists for one job: get your text into the format you need (Word, PDF, Google Docs, Jira, Slack, LaTeX and more) without retyping, without losing tables, and without uploading private documents to someone else's server.
How it works
Every conversion runs as JavaScript inside your browser tab. When you paste text or open a file, it is read into memory on your device, converted there, and the result is offered back to you as a download or a copy to your clipboard. There is no upload step and no server that receives your content, so there is nothing for us to store, log or train on.
Verify it yourself
You do not have to take our word for it:
- Open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and select the Network tab.
- Paste a document or open a file in any converter and run the conversion.
- You will see no request carrying your content. The only third-party request is the Google Analytics page-view script described in our privacy policy.
Once a page has loaded you can even disconnect from the internet and keep converting text formats.
What we are honest about
Each converter page has a Known limitations section listing what does not convert well — for example, scanned PDFs without a text layer, legacy .doc files (text only), or math and diagrams in Word output — and what to do instead. The example output on each page is generated by the converter itself when the site is built, not written by hand.
Built on open source
MDConverter stands on these excellent open-source projects:
- marked — Parses Markdown (GitHub Flavored Markdown) into HTML for previews, HTML, PDF and email output.
- highlight.js — Syntax-highlights fenced code blocks.
- Turndown — Turns HTML (web pages, pasted Google Docs and Word content) into Markdown, with GFM tables.
- mammoth.js — Reads Word .docx files.
- docx — Writes native Word .docx files with real heading styles and tables.
- PDF.js — Reads the text layer of PDF files (Mozilla's PDF engine).
- PptxGenJS — Writes PowerPoint .pptx decks.
- JSZip — Opens .pptx files and packages batch downloads as ZIP.
- Papa Parse — Parses CSV and spreadsheet data.
- js-yaml — Parses and writes YAML (including OpenAPI specs).
- html2canvas — Renders Markdown to PNG images.

Who runs MDConverter
MDConverter is built and maintained by the MDConverter team, the same small team behind MarkdownTables.com and MarkdownPreview.net. We test every converter against real documents — Word reports, exported Google Docs, ChatGPT and Claude answers, multi-column PDFs — and publish what changes in the changelog. Guides in Learn Markdown and Guides are written by the team and checked against each app's official documentation.
