Known Limitations of Excel (XLSX) to Markdown

What this converter does not do (yet), and what to do instead.

  • Legacy .xls (Excel 97–2003) and .ods files are not supported; save them as .xlsx first.
  • Charts, images, comments and cell colours are not converted — Markdown tables hold text only.
  • Password-protected (encrypted) workbooks cannot be opened; remove the password in Excel first.
  • Custom number formats beyond dates, percentages, currency and thousands separators show the underlying value.

Pipeline Architecture Specification

The .xlsx file is unzipped in your browser with JSZip. The converter reads the workbook’s sheet list and relationships, the shared-strings table, and the cell styles to learn each cell’s number format. Cells are placed on a grid by their A1 references, typed (shared string, inline string, boolean, error, number), and numbers are rendered with their format: dates from Excel’s serial numbers (1900 and 1904 systems), percentages, currency and thousands separators. Empty edges are trimmed and each sheet is written as a GitHub Flavored Markdown table.
