How to Copy Equations from ChatGPT into Word

By the MDConverter team · Updated · 4 min read

Quick answer

ChatGPT writes math in LaTeX, so its copy button gives you text like \(x^2\) and \[ … \] rather than equations. To get editable Word equations, paste the whole answer into ChatGPT to Word and download the .docx — fractions, roots, sums, integrals, Greek letters and sub- and superscripts become native Word equations. For a single formula, Word can also convert LaTeX itself: insert an equation, switch the Equation tab to LaTeX, paste the formula without its delimiters and choose Convert › Professional.

Why equations break when you paste them

The chat window typesets formulas, but the answer behind them is Markdown with LaTeX math. Inline math sits between \( and \), displayed equations between \[ and \] (Claude and some other assistants use $…$ and $$…$$ instead). The copy button copies that source, so Word receives the backslashes and braces as ordinary text.

What the copy button puts on your clipboard
Markdown
The roots of \(ax^2 + bx + c = 0\) are

\[
x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}
\]
Word shows exactly these characters. Selecting the typeset formula with the mouse instead copies the chat’s HTML, which Word usually turns into a jumble of repeated symbols.

Method 1: Convert the whole answer (best for several equations)

  1. Click the copy icon under ChatGPT’s reply.
  2. Paste it into ChatGPT to Word.
  3. Click Download .docx and open the file in Word.

Every \( \), \[ \], $ $ and $$ $$ formula becomes a native Word equation — the same kind you get from Insert › Equation — so you can click into it and edit it. Displayed equations are centred on their own line; inline ones stay in the sentence. Headings, lists, tables and bold text are converted at the same time. The conversion runs in your browser, so the answer is not uploaded.

What converts: fractions (\frac, \dfrac), roots (\sqrt, \sqrt[n]), sums, products and integrals with limits, sub- and superscripts, Greek letters and common symbols, functions such as \sin and \log, \text{…}, \mathbb{R}, accents such as \hat and \bar, and brackets sized with \left( … \right).

What stays as LaTeX text: matrices and multi-line environments (\begin{pmatrix}, \begin{aligned}, anything with &). They are kept in a math font so nothing is lost; convert those few with Method 2.

Have the answer saved as a .md file instead? Markdown to Word does the same for files.

Method 2: Paste one formula as LaTeX in Word

Word for Microsoft 365 can build an equation from LaTeX:

  1. Press Alt + = (or Insert › Equation) to add an empty equation.
  2. On the Equation tab, in the Conversions group, choose LaTeX instead of UnicodeMath.
  3. Paste the formula without its delimiters — \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}, not \[ … \].
  4. Choose Convert › Current – Professional (or press Ctrl + =).

This handles matrices and aligned equations that Method 1 leaves as text, but it is one formula at a time. LaTeX input is a Word feature; PowerPoint and Outlook only accept UnicodeMath, so for slides, build the equation in Word and copy it across.

Method 3: Pandoc (for many files, on your computer)

If you already use the command line, Pandoc converts Markdown with TeX math into Word equations:

pandoc answer.md -o answer.docx

Save each answer as a .md file first. Pandoc covers more LaTeX than a browser converter, including matrices, but it needs installing and has no preview.

Google Docs, PDF and other destinations

  • PDF: ChatGPT to PDF typesets every formula (with KaTeX, the same family of renderer the chat uses), so the PDF looks like the chat.
  • Google Docs: there is no LaTeX import. Use Insert › Equation and type the formula — the Docs equation editor accepts commands such as \frac, \sqrt and \alpha as you type.
  • Apple Pages: Insert › Equation accepts LaTeX directly; paste the formula without delimiters.
  • Plain text (email, chat apps): ask ChatGPT to “write the formulas in plain text with Unicode symbols, like x² + y² = r²” — or strip the delimiters with ChatGPT to plain text.

Ask ChatGPT for math that converts cleanly

A sentence in your prompt avoids most problems:

“Write all math in LaTeX using \( \) for inline and \[ \] for display equations. Avoid matrices and aligned environments unless I ask for them.”

If you need one formula for Word’s equation box, ask: “Give me only the LaTeX for that equation in a code block, without delimiters.” The code block’s copy button then gives you exactly what step 3 of Method 2 needs.

Which apps turn LaTeX into an equation themselves, without a converter.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

ProblemFix
The Word document shows \(, \) or $$ around formulasThe answer was pasted as plain text. Convert it with ChatGPT to Word, or remove the delimiters and use Word’s LaTeX conversion for each formula.
Pasting the typeset formula gives repeated or scrambled symbolsMouse selection copies the chat’s HTML, which carries two versions of each formula. Use the copy button instead and convert the text.
Word’s Convert button produces a single line of codeThe Equation tab is set to UnicodeMath. Switch the Conversions group to LaTeX, then convert again.
A matrix stayed as LaTeX in the converted documentMatrices are not converted automatically. Click into it, select the LaTeX text, cut it, and paste it into a new equation with the LaTeX option (Method 2).
