How to Export a ChatGPT Conversation: Every Option Explained
By the MDConverter team · Updated · 4 min read
Quick answer
To export your entire ChatGPT history, go to Settings > Data controls > Export data, confirm, and download the ZIP file that arrives by email. To save a single conversation or answer, copy it and convert it to a PDF or Word document, or use the Share button to create a link. Which option is right depends on whether you need a file, a backup or something to send to another person.
The options at a glance
| You want to… | Best option | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Save one answer as a document | Copy → ChatGPT to PDF or ChatGPT to Word | A clean PDF or .docx with headings, tables and code |
| Save a whole conversation as a file | Copy each turn → convert, or print the page | A PDF or .docx of the conversation |
| Show a conversation to someone | Share button | A read-only link anyone with it can open |
| Back up everything | Settings > Data controls > Export data | A ZIP of your full history, sent by email |
| Move content into notes (Obsidian, Notion) | Copy button → paste | Markdown that those apps read directly |
Save a single answer as PDF or Word
- Click the copy icon under the answer. This copies the Markdown version (with
**and#symbols). - Paste it into ChatGPT to PDF and choose Print / Save PDF, or into ChatGPT to Word and choose Download Word (.docx).
You get only the answer — no sidebar, buttons or cut-off code — with real headings, tables and page breaks. Both converters run in your browser, so the conversation is not uploaded anywhere. If you only need clean text for an email or form, use Remove asterisks from ChatGPT text instead.
Save a whole conversation as one file
ChatGPT does not have a one-click "download this chat" button. Two ways that work:
- Copy and combine (cleanest result). Copy each of your prompts and each answer into the converter's editor, adding a heading such as
## Meand## ChatGPTbefore each turn. Then download as PDF or Word. Slower, but the result reads like a document and you can leave out the turns you do not need. - Print the page (fastest). Open the conversation, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) and choose Save as PDF. You get the whole chat as it appears on screen. Long code blocks and wide tables can be cut off at the page edge, and the layout depends on your browser.
Browser extensions that export chats also exist; they need permission to read your ChatGPT pages, so check who publishes them before installing one.
Share a conversation with a link
Open the conversation and click Share at the top. ChatGPT creates a link that anyone who has it can open to read the conversation (they do not need an account to view it). Good for showing a colleague how you got an answer; not a backup — if you delete the conversation or the link, it stops working.
To review or delete links you have created, open Settings > Data controls > Shared links.
Export your entire ChatGPT history
- Click your profile picture and open Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
- Next to Export data, click Export, then Confirm export.
- Wait for the email from OpenAI and click the download link. The link expires after a limited time, so download it promptly — if it has expired, request a new export.
The download is a ZIP file containing your chat history and related account data. Recent exports have included a chat.html file you can open in any browser to read all conversations, and a conversations.json file with the same content in a structured format for developers. Exports can take a while to arrive for large histories.
Who can use it: the self-service export is available on Free, Plus and Pro accounts (and some Edu workspaces). It is not available in ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspaces, where admins manage data instead.
Turning the export into documents
chat.html is one long page. To turn a conversation from it into a document, open chat.html in your browser, select the conversation's text, copy it, and paste it into HTML to Markdown (it reads formatted text when you paste). Tidy it in the editor, then convert the Markdown to Word or PDF.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| The export email never arrived | Check spam and the email address on your account. Large histories can take a long time; request again only after waiting. |
| The download link says it has expired | Links are time-limited. Request a new export in Settings > Data controls. |
| The printed PDF cuts off code or tables | Copy the answer and use ChatGPT to PDF, which wraps code and fits tables to the page. |
| No Export option in Data controls | You are probably in a Business or Enterprise workspace, where self-service export is not offered. Ask your workspace admin. |
