Convert Confluence Pages to Markdown

Copy a Confluence page and paste it here — or paste its storage format, wiki markup or an exported .html file. Headings, tables, code macros with their language, info and warning panels, task lists and mentions come out as clean Markdown for Git, a static site, Obsidian or an AI prompt.

Quick Tutorial

How to Convert Confluence to Markdown in 3 Simple Steps

No installation or registration required. Follow these steps to convert and export your files in seconds.

1

Copy the page

Open the page, click into the content, press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C (Cmd on Mac) — or copy storage format or wiki markup.

2

Paste here

Paste into the editor; the input type is recognised automatically. Exported .html files can be dropped in too.

3

Copy or download Markdown

Check the preview, then copy the Markdown or download a .md file.

Known Limitations of Confluence to Markdown

What this converter does not do (yet), and what to do instead.

  • Page links become their link text, because page titles are not URLs outside Confluence.
  • Attachments and images are referenced by name; download the files separately.
  • Dynamic macros (Jira issue lists, page trees, charts) have no content to convert and are removed or reduced to a key.

Best Practices & Pitfalls

Pro Tips & Edge Cases Handled for Confluence to Markdown

Practical advice for achieving high-fidelity conversions and resolving syntax edge cases.

Developer Pro Tips

  • Click into the page body before Ctrl+A, so you copy the content rather than the whole screen.
  • For many pages, an HTML space export is faster than copying one by one: drop each exported .html file on the editor.
  • Exported .docx pages can go through Word to Markdown instead.
  • Panels become GitHub alerts — they render as callouts on GitHub and in Obsidian.
  • Moving notes from Notion as well? Notion to Markdown cleans its export the same way.

Edge Cases Resolved Automatically

⚠️ A link inside a table cell ([text|url])
Resolution: Links are converted before cells are split, so the | inside the link no longer breaks the row.
⚠️ Code macro parameters in any order ({code:title=a.sh|language=bash})
Resolution: The language is read from the language= parameter or a bare first value, in Confluence and older Jira styles.
⚠️ Macros nested inside panels
Resolution: Storage format is resolved from the innermost macro outwards, so a code block inside an info panel stays a code block in the alert.
Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Confluence to Markdown

Comprehensive answers to common technical, formatting, security, and compatibility questions.

Confluence has no built-in Markdown export. Copy the page content and paste it here (the clipboard carries the formatting), or paste the page’s storage format or wiki markup. For whole spaces, an HTML space export works too: drop each exported page’s .html file on the editor.

Under The Hood

How the Confluence to Markdown Engine Works

Every step below runs in your browser tab; your content is never sent to a server.

01

Lexical Tokenization

Raw Confluence stream is parsed into syntax tokens with boundary and nesting validation.

02

AST Tree Construction

Tokens are mapped into a standardized in-memory Abstract Syntax Tree structure.

03

Semantic Translation

AST nodes are translated into compliant Markdown elements, headings, and tables.

04

Client-Side Serialization

Output is generated directly in your browser, so it is ready to copy or download immediately.

Pipeline Architecture Specification

The input is classified: storage format (ac:/ri: elements), HTML, or wiki markup. Storage format macros are rewritten into plain HTML (code, panels, expand, status, tasks, images, links, mentions, emoticons) and converted with the HTML to Markdown engine. HTML from copied or exported pages is cleaned in the browser’s DOM (export chrome removed, panels, task lists, expand sections, mentions, emoticons and lozenges normalised) and converted the same way. Wiki markup goes through the shared Jira/Confluence parser.

Processing Engine
Storage-format rewriter + DOM clean-up + Turndown; Atlassian wiki parser
Specification Standards
Confluence storage format / HTML / wiki markup → GitHub Flavored Markdown
Execution Latency
Instant for typical pages
Privacy SLA
100% client-side (nothing is uploaded)
