Convert Markdown for Telegram Chats and Bots

Telegram’s apps and its Bot API use different formatting. Paste Markdown and choose the target: text for the Telegram app (**bold**, __italic__, ~~strike~~), or a bot message in MarkdownV2 with every reserved character escaped, or in Telegram’s HTML subset. Long messages are flagged against the 4,096-character limit.

Known Limitations of Markdown to Telegram

What this converter does not do (yet), and what to do instead.

  • Telegram has no headings or tables; they are approximated with bold lines and monospace blocks.
  • Underline and spoilers have no Markdown syntax, so they are not produced from Markdown input.
  • Images are not sent; image links become links.
  • The app output relies on Telegram’s send-time markers; in very old app versions use the Format menu instead.

Best Practices & Pitfalls

Pro Tips & Edge Cases Handled for Markdown to Telegram

Practical advice for achieving high-fidelity conversions and resolving syntax edge cases.

Developer Pro Tips

  • In the Telegram app, a formatting pair must start and end on the same line.
  • For bots, HTML mode is the most forgiving when your text comes from users or databases.
  • Code blocks with a language (```python) get syntax highlighting in recent Telegram apps.
  • For WhatsApp, use Markdown to WhatsApp — its markers are different.

Edge Cases Resolved Automatically

⚠️ Periods, hyphens and exclamation marks in MarkdownV2
Resolution: Escaped as \. \- \! outside formatting, as the Bot API requires.
⚠️ Backticks or backslashes inside code
Resolution: Inside code and pre entities only ` and \ are escaped, as the spec says.
⚠️ A URL with brackets, like …/Foo_(bar)
Resolution: Inside the link’s (…) only ) and \ are escaped, so the URL still works.
Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Markdown to Telegram

Comprehensive answers to common technical, formatting, security, and compatibility questions.

In the Telegram apps, type **bold**, __italic__, ~~strikethrough~~ or ||spoiler||, single backticks for code and three backticks for a code block; the formatting is applied when you send (each pair must be on one line). You can also select text and use the Format menu. The “Telegram app” output on this page uses exactly these markers.

Under The Hood

How the Markdown to Telegram Engine Works

Every step below runs in your browser tab; your content is never sent to a server.

01

Lexical Tokenization

Raw Markdown stream is parsed into syntax tokens with boundary and nesting validation.

02

AST Tree Construction

Tokens are mapped into a standardized in-memory Abstract Syntax Tree structure.

03

Semantic Translation

AST nodes are translated into compliant Telegram elements, headings, and tables.

04

Client-Side Serialization

Output is generated directly in your browser, so it is ready to copy or download immediately.

Pipeline Architecture Specification

The Markdown is parsed into a token tree with marked (GitHub Flavored Markdown) and written out for the chosen target: Telegram app markers; MarkdownV2 with the Bot API’s escaping rules applied separately to text, code and link URLs; or HTML limited to Telegram’s supported tags with &, < and > escaped. Headings become bold lines, tables become monospace grids or label/value lines, and the visible length is checked against the 4,096-character message limit.

Why Choose MDConverter for Markdown to Telegram?

Three outputs: Telegram app text, Bot API MarkdownV2, or Bot API HTML
MarkdownV2 escaping done for you: _ * [ ] ( ) ~ ` > # + - = | { } . ! outside formatting, ` and \ inside code, ) and \ inside links
HTML output uses only the tags Telegram accepts (b, i, s, a, code, pre, blockquote)
Code blocks keep their language for Telegram’s syntax highlighting
Tables become monospace grids or label/value lines; a warning appears past 4,096 characters
Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded

100% Client-Side Privacy & Security Guarantee

Unlike online converters that upload your files to a remote server, MDConverter runs every conversion with JavaScript inside your browser tab. Your documents are never uploaded, so they never leave your machine.
